It is the belief and mission of every educator in the Maverick Family that we will foster an encouraging learning atmosphere structured with safety, respect, and academic excellence that empowers and supports our students as they exceed their potential and become positive, productive members of our community and society. Marshall High School, the centerpiece of the district and one of Marshall's most notable landmarks for those driving into town via U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 43, has consistently met state standards academically with distinctions, and is a full-fledged grade 9-12 AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) as of the 2016-2017 school year. Marshall High School began operating on Sept. 12, 1898, in a building leased from Marshall University. In September of 1911, 200 students moved into a new high school building at 600 W. Houston Street. By 1923, another building change was necessary, so the old Marshall University building was torn down and replaced with a new building facing W. Houston. This served as Marshall High School from 1924-1980. A new high school, born out of the passage of a successful bond issue in 1976, was opened in its current location at Maverick Drive in 1980 and has been the home of the Mavericks ever since. In 2018-2019, MHS achieved a "Met Standard" accountability rating and a C-grade from the Texas Education Agency, an improvement of seven points from the previous year. School hours at MHS are 8:30 a.m. - 4:01 p.m., Monday-Friday, during the school year.
